Pavers or natural stone?
Pavers are man-made stones for paving patios or walkways designed to mimic natural stones. While natural stones are quarried and must be cut into smaller unique pieces, pavers are manufactured so they have a more uniform design.
Both pavers and natural stone are good options for a patio or outdoor living space. Adding a walkway or patio to your hardscape will make it enjoyable to go outside in nice weather, and some of our clients even go out barefoot! However, each material has its advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages of Pavers
· Can look like natural stone
· Built in individual pieces, so easier to replace individual parts
· Weight distributed on different pieces; less likely to crack
· Faster and easier to install
· Will create a more uniform look, as they manufactured
· More affordable option
· Easy to maintain
· Not slippery when wet
Disadvantages of Pavers
· The color can fade over time
· Can get weeds growing between pavers, if not installed properly
Why Choose Pavers
Pavers come in various sizes and shapes for your hardscapes, including anything from long, plank sections to brick-like designs.
First, concrete pavers are less expensive than natural stone because it is easier to manufacture them than it is to quarry stone. They are also easy to install and can achieve pretty much the same look as natural stone, except they will be more uniform.
You can also get more variety in color for pavers, but that color can fade over time. Pavers’ color can fade over time because it is pigment added to concrete and not inherently part of the material. The darker the pigment, the more likely it will fade over time.
The size of the paver you use can create different looks as well. Smaller pavers will make a space feel cozier with texture and interest, while larger pavers make a space appear larger and less busy.
Advantages of Natural Stone
· Extremely durable: can withstand time with little cracks or maintenance
· Never go out of style because they have a classic look
Disadvantages of Natural Stone
· More costly option
· May not be as flat/level as pavers
· Fewer color options as they are naturally occurring
· Less customizable
Why Choose Natural Stone
Natural stone is the real deal. Pavers are made to mimic natural stone, but when you install stone in your outdoor living space, you get the real thing. They are much more durable since stones can last for thousands of years. However, this also comes with a higher price tag.
Additionally, since natural stone is quarried rather than manufactured, it’s harder to get a fully flat surface with natural stone. So, if you need a flat area like under the grill, it might not be the best option.
