Pergolas: More Than Just Decoration!

Building an outdoor living space can be a daunting task; some start small, some work in phases, and some know everything they want from the beginning. Regardless of where you start, we pride ourselves on knowing how to help you get the most out of your space, and one of the most versatile tools in our work belt is a pergola. The customization options — columns, slats, end shapes, attachments, material, and more — are virtually endless. This makes a pergola one of the most useful pieces of your patio!

Naturally, the midwest and pergolas pair wonderfully. The summer swelter is minimized by the overhead shade-providing pergola slats, and sometimes even a well-placed ceiling fan or retractable canopy. Even winter is made easier with the right outdoor heater, fireplace, or covering for your structure! However, if our newsletter was any indication, a pergola can be practical and playful.

For instance, our February 2020 Newsletter recently gave our audience the challenge of an outdoor movie night to kick off spring. A pergola is the perfect outdoor feature to tie into your special night; whether that be watching baseball while grilling outdoors or having a movie-themed family night. Utilizing a few simple things, like an outdoor projector screen attached to your pergola or house, comfortable seating, and plenty of marshmallows to roast, you can create an entire experience for your family. While you’re thinking of what movie to base your theme around, consider what decorations you’ll be displaying as well. Consider hanging twinkle lights, garland, or balloons from the slats or purlins; you can purchase them or even D.I.Y for a more custom look.  After all, we call it an outdoor living space for a reason!

If you haven’t already, subscribe to our monthly newsletter. In the months leading up to spring, we’ll be delivering ideas you can use to decorate, cook, and plan your night. Also, don’t let our suggestion of a movie night limit your ideas; baseball’s Opening Day is scheduled for April 1st, 2021, and would make an equally amazing event for your family. Remember, once you’re all done setting up for the party forward your pictures to hello@kansascityhardscapes.com or tag us on Facebook or Instagram!
