How Long Does a Hardscape Really Last? Here’s What You Should Know
When you're putting serious time and money into your outdoor space, whether it’s a fire pit, patio, seating wall, or full backyard transformation, you want it to last. Not just look good for a few months, but hold up for years. That all comes down to how it’s built, especially what’s happening beneath the surface.
Most Hardscapes Don’t Fail on the Surface. They Fail Below It.
We’ve been called in more times than we can count to fix jobs that are only a few years old but already falling apart. Leaning walls. Sinking steps. Patios that looked amazing at first but are now cracked, uneven, or shifting. And it’s almost always the same issue: no proper foundation.
One house we went to had a gorgeous fire pit and seating wall. It looked great from a distance, but the second you leaned on it, the whole thing moved. Turns out, the contractor had built everything right on top of the dirt. No footer, no base, nothing. After a couple of freeze-thaw cycles, the ground shifted and so did the wall. The homeowners had no idea, and now they’re stuck deciding between an expensive repair or starting over. It’s frustrating, and unfortunately, it’s common.
Our Process: Built Right from the Ground Up
We build every single project on a proper foundation. That starts with a base of three-quarter-inch clean gravel. Not crushed stone. Not AB-3. We use clean gravel because it drains water properly and compacts into a solid, stable surface.
After compacting the gravel, we pour a concrete footer right on top. That becomes the rock-solid base that everything else is built on. From retaining walls to steps to outdoor kitchens, it’s all tied into that foundation. This approach takes more time, more planning, and more effort—but it’s the reason our work holds up year after year, through all kinds of weather.
Why It Matters
Most homeowners don’t think to ask what’s under their patio or wall. They just assume it’s being built right. But what’s underneath is what really determines how long it will last. Without the right base and a solid concrete footer, even the nicest-looking hardscape can shift, crack, or fail completely within just a few years.
e’ve seen beautiful projects fall apart simply because the foundation was skipped or done wrong. It’s the kind of mistake that’s easy to overlook in the moment—but expensive to fix later. That’s why we build it right from the ground up. You’re not just paying for a finished look. You’re paying for peace of mind that it’s going to last.
