Our commitment
Kansas City Hardscapes is committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, including people who use assistive technologies like screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification, voice control, or other tools.
We treat accessibility as part of how the site should work, not as an extra layer bolted on after the fact.
The standard we follow
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. This is the standard most US courts reference when reviewing whether a private business website meets the spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
WCAG 2.1 AA covers things like color contrast, keyboard navigation, alt text on images, form labels, page structure, and the ability to resize text without breaking the layout.
What we have done
Across the pages we audit most often, we have:
- Run automated accessibility scans (Lighthouse and axe-core) and fixed every reported issue
- Completed a manual code-level review on May 26, 2026 covering the items automated tools cannot judge: alt text quality across 295 images, link text clarity across 1,503 links, page title uniqueness, language declarations, heading hierarchy, and the presence of a "Skip to main content" keyboard shortcut on every page
- Added
aria-labelattributes to controls that didn't have visible text - Added a single
mainlandmark on every page so screen reader users can skip directly to content - Added a "Skip to main content" link that appears for keyboard users when they press Tab, so they don't have to tab through the full navigation on every page
- Tightened color contrast on small uppercase labels so they meet the 4.5:1 ratio
- Made sure every form input has an associated label, including the Project Calculator
- Used semantic heading structure (
h1, thenh2, thenh3) so the page outline is navigable - Provided meaningful alt text on project photos rather than empty or filename-style descriptions
Known limitations
We are honest about the places this site is not yet fully compliant, or where third-party tools we use may not be:
- Calendly scheduling: when you schedule a consultation, the booking interface is provided by Calendly. Their accessibility is improving but it is outside our control. If you cannot complete a booking, please call us at (816) 499-2547 and we will book the meeting by phone.
- Embedded YouTube videos: some pages embed videos. Captions are available on each video through the YouTube player.
- AI Patio Visualizer and 3D viewers: these interactive tools are visual by nature. We are working on text-based alternatives. In the meantime, please call us and we will walk through your design verbally and over email.
- Manual keyboard and screen reader walkthroughs: the May 26 review covered everything that can be checked by reading the code. A full manual walkthrough by a user navigating with only a keyboard, and by a user listening with a screen reader, is the next step. Independent third-party audit is on the list when our usage volume justifies it.
