Stone Patios

When considering your landscape and hardscape designs, there are many options for how to increase the aesthetics while also increasing the usability of your outdoor area. Making your yard a place that not only looks amazing, but a space that you can enjoy with your family, is the key to outdoor living. The first step to any outdoor living area is the same as an indoor living area, a floor.

Natural stone continues to be a client favorite. The natural look of the stone combined with the durability of stone make for a great patio for any backyard space.

Keep in mind that natural stone isn’t just for patios. You can install natural stone on a walkway, a front porch, or even an outdoor fireplace. One of the greatest benefits of using natural stone is its ability to withstand many weather conditions, making your outdoor living area perfect any time of the year.

Why natural stone

No two pieces the same.

Manufactured pavers come out of a mold, so a pallet of them is consistent by design. Natural stone is quarried and cut, which means the color runs through the whole thickness of the piece and every one lands slightly different from the one beside it. That variation is the reason people choose it, and it is the thing a concrete product can imitate but never quite match.

It also ages differently. A paver holds its shape and slowly loses color under full sun, while stone tends to keep its color and soften in character as it weathers. On an older home in particular, stone reads as though it belongs there.

Materials

Which stone, and why it matters here.

Stone selection carries more weight in Kansas City than it does in a milder climate. Ground temperatures here cross the freezing point dozens of times over a single winter. Water works into a porous stone, freezes, expands, and over enough seasons a softer piece will flake or wear at the surface. Salt through the winter speeds that along.

Flagstone is the classic irregular look, hand set piece by piece with no two shapes alike. It suits an informal yard and an older house.

Travertine is a natural limestone that runs warm beige through to cream. It stays cooler underfoot than most surfaces in full sun, which is why it gets used so often around pools.

Bluestone is denser and cooler in tone, and it cuts to clean rectangles for a more formal, orderly patio.

Whichever direction you go, the grade of the stone matters as much as the type. Cheap stone in this climate is a short term decision.

Beyond the patio

The same stone, elsewhere in the yard.

Natural stone is not only a patio material. The same stone shows up on walkways, front porches and steps, and as veneer on a fireplace, a seating wall or the piers under a pavilion. Carrying one stone through several of those ties a yard together in a way that mixing materials does not.

It is worth thinking about early, since ordering the stone for the whole project at once means it comes from the same lot and the color actually matches.

Pricing

What a stone patio costs.

Stone patios start around $12,000, and most projects land between $12,000 and $36,000.

The stone itself is the biggest variable, and the spread between an economical flagstone and a high grade travertine is wide. Size follows. After that it is the pattern, since irregular flagstone is hand fit piece by piece and takes considerably longer to lay than cut stone running to a pattern. Site conditions matter too, including how much grade has to be dealt with and whether we can get equipment into the yard.

Questions

What homeowners ask us about stone patios.

How much does a stone patio cost in Kansas City? Most land between $12,000 and $36,000, with smaller patios starting around $12,000. The stone you choose moves the number more than anything else, followed by the size of the patio and whether the stone is irregular and hand fit or cut to a pattern.

Is natural stone better than pavers?Neither one is better outright, and what is underneath matters far more than what is on top. Stone gives you variation and color that runs all the way through the piece. Pavers are engineered for freeze and thaw, cost less, and can be replaced individually if one gets damaged. We build both and will give you a straight answer for your yard.

Does natural stone hold up to Kansas City winters?Good stone does. The risk is porosity, since water that soaks into a soft stone, freezes and expands will eventually flake the surface, and winter salt makes that worse. Choosing a dense enough stone for this climate and setting it on a base built to handle our clay is what determines whether it lasts.

Does a stone patio get hot in the sun?Less than you might expect, depending on the stone. Travertine in particular stays noticeably cooler underfoot than darker surfaces, which is why it is such a common choice around pools.

How much maintenance does a stone patio need? Not much. A rinse and a sweep through the season, and keeping an eye on the joints. Sealing is optional on most stone and comes down to whether you want the wet look it produces.

Can natural stone go over my existing concrete?Often, yes. Stone can be set over sound concrete, which saves the demolition and the haul off. The concrete has to be in good condition and draining properly, and the added height has to work with your door thresholds and steps.

Can you match the stone to my house?Usually. Stone gets chosen against the brick or stone already on the house, and if the same material is going on a fireplace or a wall we order it together so it comes from one lot and the color matches.
